New theme, for me at least...

No, I haven't changed to Wordpress. I just found the Kubrick blog theme at the place that's at the bottom of the page.

So please be patient as I tweak this template.

I will try to turn the suck knob down.

At least it's a little easier on the eyes.

Just in time for the last movie release!

It's not easy being evil. All that pent up angst can make you form an Emo band, or get a blog.

Thanks to Scott for the find.

So do I need to learn Latin now?

If I am elected, my pope name will be:
Pope Horrendous Brian VII
What's your pope name?

A bit of advice...

When the organizers of a parade that you are putting on TV tell you that they've re-numbered all of the 200 plus entries 30 minutes before you go on air you should just say "Fuck it" and start drinking.

One down, two to go.

It's Fiesta time here in San Antonio.

It's our excuse to descend on downtown and drink too much beer and eat food off a stick to celebrate who knows what for 10 days.

The Fiesta "event" become so huge that it needs not one... not two... but three parades to truly celebrate the meaning of Fiesta, which is as stated before "drinking beer and eating food off a a stick".

Fiesta is also my busiest time of year at work. My station is the station that broadcasts these parades for the poor sods at home to watch and I am the lucky bastard who gets to produce all three parades.

Yay me.

It means that I have to get all the information for about 400 parade entries (floats, bands, balloons, etc.) and distill it into something resembling organized chaos, then write scripts for the hosts to read. I also have to make sure all music and graphics are made for the shows, then get them to the TV truck. Then on the day of, I have to fix all the last minute changes. All without so much as an intern to help.

But the worst part is that my wife's b-day lands during Fiesta so her party has a 3 in 7 chance of being re-scheduled.

Our first parade was Monday night and the next 2 happen on Friday and Saturday.

I'll end up with about 20 hours overtime but it hardly seems worth it.

I am so looking forward to Sunday.

from nin:

nin has made a Garageband file of their new single "The Hand That Feeds" available for Mac users.

So what does that mean?

You get to remix the song as you wish. Add effects, instruments even your own vocals to the song. Whatever you want.

This is such a cool idea I hope other artists follow.

Here's a link to the file. 70MB download.

It's that time again...

It's April.

April is my busiest time of year. It's when it all hits at work and Mary's birthday falls in the middle of the whole mess.

Next week are 3 parades that I am producing for TV. The most important part of my job is to make sure we hit our breaks so we can pay the bills. The hardest part of the gig is to pace a live event that is totally out of my control.

Then ratings start at the end of next week so I get to edit more than my share of sweeps news promos.

And I still have all of my commercial work to deal with.

But things could be worse.

One of the other 2 producer/directors in my department is shipping out Friday to Iraq for 5 months or so. He's a combat camera guy so he'll be where the shooting is. He's not acting scared, so we've been doing it for him.

I'm tired already and it hasn't even started.

Purple is the new red, but in a more compassionate way.

I know about a billion teachers and most of them haven't heard how stressful the color red is for students.

IMO these kids and their parents need to toughen up. See number 9.

Dr. Triffid's 10 Rules for Life Survival:

1. Always assume that the person on the other end of the line is taping the conversation.

2. Tired of your boss yelling at you? Don't keep quitting jobs and starting over again and again. Become a boss and get to yell at people.

3. Never, ever, ever forget your eyeglasses at the Airport Health Spa off U.S. Route 23 in Maumee, Ohio.

4. Half of the people in the world are men. Leave the seat up if you want to.

5. Live by Zall's Law -- "Whenever you get a mouthful of scalding hot soup, the next thing you do will be wrong."

6. No matter how much Puff Daddy brags and pretends to rap on the subject, jail is a hellhole and you do not want to go there for any amount of time whatsoever.

7. Friends come and go. Enemies accumulate.

8. Life isn't fair. That doesn't change. Get used to it.

9. No matter what they tell you in school, nobody in the real world cares about your self esteem level.

10. And as Coach Finstock sez, "Never get less than 12 hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body."

In love with a place

The first time I saw it, I was in love.

Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater has always seemed to be the best expression of "living space" to me and greatly influenced our house purchase.

I'm a fan of Mr. Wright's work. When we went to New York we made sure to visit the Guggenheim mostly to see Wright's design in person.

I've got to go now, I'm in the middle of a big bike race!

A little perspective

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

After seeing this picture from Menlo Park, CA I've stopped bitching about the $2.00 a gallon I've been paying. Make me real glad though that we got the xB to almost offset the lack of mileage that our '87 Landcruiser doesn't get.

Almost...

I saw this and thought it put things in perspective.

Almost...

Diet Snapple 16 oz $1.29 = $10.32 per gallon

Lipton Ice Tea 16 oz $1.19 = $9.52 per gallon

Gatorade 20 oz $1.59 = $10.17 per gallon

Ocean Spray 16 oz $1.25 = $10.00 per gallon

Brake Fluid 12 oz $3.15 = $33.60 per gallon

Vick's Nyquil 6 oz $8.35 = $178.13 per gallon

Pepto Bismol 4 oz $3.85 = $123.20 per gallon

Whiteout 7 oz $1.39 = $25.42 per gallon

Scope 1.5 oz $0.99 = $84.48 per gallon

And this is the kicker:

Evian water 9 oz $1.49 = $21.19 per gallon!
